主語と動詞のある文の前にthatやwhether，if がつくと，ひとまとまりの名詞のはたらきをします。

■＜that＋文＞〜ということ

�@ I know 　　 that he drives the car.
　　私は知っている 　　彼がその車を運転するということを
　　　※thatはよく省略されます

■＜whether（if）＋文＞〜かどうか（ということ）

�A Do you know 　　 whether（if） he drives the car?
　　あなたは知っていますか? 　　　　　 彼がその車を運転するかどうか

POINT that〜，whether（if）〜のどちらもふつうの名詞と同じように，主語や目的語，補語などに幅広く使われます。

■that〜は「〜ということ」という意味の名詞のまとまりになります。

�@ We are apt to think 　 that traffic accidents will happen to others，

私たちは考えがちだ     　　　　　　　　　　　　     交通事故は他人には起こる（と）

but not to ourselves.

しかし 自分たちには起こらない（と）

�A This coat is quite satisfactory，　 except （that） the sleeves are too short for me.

このコートは　まったく申し分ない　      　　  　   〜をのぞけば　　　　　　　　　　    袖が私には短すぎること

※前置詞のあとにくるのは名詞だけですが，that〜も前置詞のあとにきます。

�B It is clear　  that the old system doesn't work anymore.

明らかだ　　　　   　　　　   古いシステムがもはや機能しないこと（は）

※itは仮の主語で，実際の主語はthat〜。

�C I think 　 it probable  　（that） she started the rumor.

私は思う　  　  ありうる（と）　　　　　　　  彼女がそのうわさを流したこと（は）

※itは仮の目的語で，実際の目的語はthat〜。

■whether（if）〜は「〜かどうか（ということ）」という意味の名詞のまとまりになります。

�D The question is 　 whether the meeting will be held.

問題は    　      　　　　　　     ミーティングが行われるかどうか（ということ）だ

�E It is unknown　  whether there is life on the planet or not.

わからない　　　　　  　　　　　　　　     その惑星に生物がいるかどうか（は）

�F It is no difference  　to me  　whether you know the truth or not.

ちがいはない　　　        　　 　私にとって  　　　　　　 あなたが事実を知っているかどうか（は）

（→あなたが事実を知っているかどうかは，私には関係ない）

※�E�F itは仮の主語で，実際の主語はwhether〜。

�G There remains the question 　 whether she will agree with our plan.

疑問が残っている　          　　　　　      　　　     彼女が私たちのプランに賛成するかどうか（という）

�H The doctor felt my arm 　　to see  if（whether） 　 the bone was broken.

医者は私の腕にふれた　       　　　  　　　  　　〜かどうかみるために　　　　　　　　  骨が折れている

■＜that＋文＞は，「〜（ということ）がうれしい」のように感情の原因を表すことも

あります。

※次のように，to不定詞でもほぼ同じ意味を表すことができます（Unit03参照）。

I was glad  　　to hear （that） he was alive.

私はうれしかった　　　　　 彼が生きていたことを聞いて

�J I was surprised　 　 that you had the guts  　　to contradict the boss.

私はおどろいた　　   　　　　　  　あなたに勇気があることに　　　 　　　　　　　   上司に反論する

■＜that＋文＞は直前の名詞を補足することもあります（同格のthat）。

�K There is no hope 　 that our team will win the race.

望みはない　　　　　　　     　　　   　 私たちのチームがレースに勝つ

�L I could not understand 　　 the fact 　　 that she was angry.

私は理解できなかった　　     　　　　　　    　 事実を 　　　　　　　　    彼女が怒った
