Brian had always done very well at school.  He had gotten good records since he entered high school, but he was never very social※.  He had done many things to make more friends.  He went to class early and stayed later, and went to school sports events too.  However, they never turned out the way he wanted them to.

He had never done any sports as a child※, so he wasn't good at playing sports.   He was very weak and had breathing※ problems.  Every time he went to a party, he did the same thing he had always done; he sat by himself in the corner and left when he thought no one was looking.

It was finally time for him to go to college.  He graduated high school at the top of his class.  His classmates knew him for being smart, but not social.  His university, which was the top in America, had many people just like him.  Brian just didn't know where to find them.  Like Brian, they had also done the same thing.  They had hid※ themselves.  College didn't start any different for Brian.

In the winter of his second year of college, his science professor※1 told him to do a group project※2.  Until now, his only friend was his roommate, who loved to go to night parties.  His roommate often invited※3 him out, but Brian always made an excuse※4 not to go.

His group project not only lasted※1 for one quarter※2, but for two quarters, which was about half the year.  This meant that Brian had to see the same people over and over again.  He was never social, so he didn't know what to do.

The professor had noticed that the group members were a little quiet in class.  After the professor had done the group assignment※, Brian met with other members.  They decided to meet that night at a coffee shop.

During the afternoon, Brian had done his daily routine of doing his homework and his apartment cleaning.  After he had done all that, he got ready to meet other members.  They met, but the first hour was a little uncomfortable.  No one talked very much and everyone seemed a little nervous.

Finally, Brian decided to tell the other members about himself.  He said that he was very shy and had always been disgusted※1 at his character.  After he had done that, the other members spoke and they all found out that they had almost the same childhood※2.  From that point, every meeting was great.  They had even done other things together, like watch movies or go out to eat.

They worked together for the next six months.  After they had done the group project, they got the best grade in the history of the university.  From then, Brian had done many other successful things and went off to start his own company.

ブライアンは学校では常に優秀でした。彼は入学したときからよい成績をおさめてきましたが，決して社交的ではありませんでした。友人をつくるために，彼はいろいろなことをしました。授業に早く行き遅くまでいましたし，学校のスポーツイベントにも参加しました。しかし，状況は彼が望んだようにはなりませんでした。

子供のときスポーツをまったくしなかったので，彼はスポーツをするのが得意ではありませんでした。からだが弱く，呼吸器にも問題をかかえていました。パーティーに行くときには，彼はいつも同じことをしました。つまり，一人ですみに座り，だれも自分を見ていないことがわかると（会場をそっと）出て行ったのです。

ついに彼が大学に行くときが来ました。彼はクラスのトップの成績で，高校を卒業しました。クラスメイトは，ブライアンが頭がよいものの社交的でないことを知っていました。彼の大学はアメリカでトップでしたが，そこにはちょうど彼と同じような（社交的でない）生徒がたくさんいました。しかし，ブライアンはそのような人をどこで見つけたらよいかわかりませんでした。ブライアンと同様に，彼らも自分を隠して生きてきたのです。大学は，彼に何もちがったものをもたらしませんでした。

大学２年生の冬に，彼の科学の教授は彼にグループ研究をするように言いました。それまで，彼の唯一の友人はルームメイトだけでしたが，その友人は夜のパーティーに行くのが好きでした。友人はよく彼をつれ出そうとしましたが，ブライアンはいつも行けない言い訳をしました。

彼のグループ研究は１学期間だけでなく，２学期のあいだ，つまりおよそ半年間続きました（４学期制の２学期分）。これは，ブライアンが同じ人に何度も会わなければならないことを意味していました。彼は決して社交的ではなかったので，何をしたらよいかわかりませんでした。

教授は，グループのメンバーがクラスでおとなしいことに気付いていました。教授がグループに課題を与えたあと，ブライアンは他のメンバーに会いました。メンバーはその夜にコーヒーショップで会うことを決めました。

午後のあいだに，ブライアンは宿題とアパートのそうじをするのが日課でした。それらをすべて終えてしまうと，彼は他のメンバーに会う準備をしました。彼らは会いましたが，最初はあまり居心地がよくはありませんでした。だれも多くを話さなかったし，みなが少しナーバスになっているようでした。

やがて，ブライアンは自分について他のメンバーに話そうと決心しました。彼は自分がたいへん内気であることや，自分の性格にいつもうんざりしていたことを話しました。彼が話し終えると，他のメンバーも話し始め，自分たちがほとんど同じ子供時代をすごしたことに気付いたのです。そのときから，会合はすばらしいものになりました。彼らは映画を見たり食事に行くなど，他のこともいっしょにするようになりました。

彼らは６ヶ月間のあいだいっしょに研究をしました。そしてグループ研究を終えたあと，大学の歴史で最高の成績を獲得したのです。その後，ブライアンは多くのことに成功し，（やがて）自分の会社を経営するようになりました。
